Tooth Damage

Tooth Damage

A tooth may need treatment due to a cavity, a fracture, or a combination of the two. The severity and extent of the damage determines how best to restore it.

Fillings

Fillings

If the tooth damage is noted early in the process and is slight, it can often be repaired with filling material. In the past, a dark colored metal based material was utilized. Today, repair is made with a tooth colored composite acrylic material which is bonded to the tooth with adhesive. This material offers better esthetics and allows for less tooth removal.

Crown

Crown

When tooth damage is moderate to severe it is often necessary to add more structural support than a filling can provide in order to prevent even greater future damage.

Crown Materials

Crown Materials

Today there are three common varieties of crowns; all ceramic, all metal. or a combination of the two materials. The main factors for consideration in material choice are strength and esthetics.

Root Canal

Root Canal

Occasionally a tooth will have deeper damage which then involves its nerve. This can be due to decay, fracture, or chronic stress to the tooth. Because a tooth nerve cannot be repaired, the nerve is removed from the root and the tooth is preserved. In most cases, the tooth will then require the extra structural protection of a crown.
